EMBRACE PEOPLE - By: Alana E. Roberts,

Do you want to live your life with true purpose? How do we know what we are meant to do? We have to know the types of people we want to work with on a daily basis. How do we know that? We must investigate it. Experiment with groups of people. All types of people. And not just people we know we are comfortable with but those we aren’t so sure about. How do we experiment with this? By getting out there. Get out into the world you live in.

We need to first open up to those we come in contact with on a daily basis. Those we meet when we are outside of our home and those we come into contact with at home while running our home. For example the coffee server at Starbucks who we see every day or every week but who we may not speak to. Do you go out of your way to say , “have a good day” or inquire as to whether their day is going well for them. Or ask if they had a good weekend? Make eye contact with them and really care when we ask about them.

Or the stranger we pass in a doorway - do we say hello or smile. Or do we hold the door for them and say “have a great day.” It may change the course of their day. You may be the only person who does notice them all day long. We need to change the attitude we may have towards people and truly embrace them as individuals.

We can do the same from our own home. We can be kind and compassionate to the mailman or the telemarketer on the phone. We can show respect to them and the job they are trying to do. These slight changes will multiply immensely as time goes on.

Another way to embrace people is to become a member of your community women’s or men’s club. Get to know the members and what they do for a living. Attend the meetings and work on the projects with the small groups to really get to know them and what they are passionate about. Their interests may help you to trigger ideas you may have never thought about.

Attend special interest group meetings or community outreach meetings. Become a volunteer for one of these outreach programs. See what jobs are available and the types of people who work with these organizations.

Start your own fun club. You may have always wanted to play a certain card game or board game. Begin with a group of four or so and rotate houses to host the monthly card game. Many exciting conversations arise during the course of a good game of cards or board game.

Take a class at the community education center in your town that you have always been interested in taking. Such as a learn to play the guitar class. Rent the guitar or other instrument you may need until you feel you may want to pursue it more intensely. These classes can really be a meeting place for individuals with the same interests as you.

Another place for interesting ideas and places to meeting new people may be your community college. There are a wide variety of courses available for all areas of interest and personal and professional development. You may have always wanted to write your own memoir but didn’t know where to start. Well start there with a beginning writing course or grammar class.

The options for embracing different people are endless. You can find out so much about others in these groups and so much more about yourself and what you would really like to do with your time.
