Health Information on Dengue Fever - By: Apurwand,

Reported by: Apurwand
Dengue fever is a viral illness transmitted primarily by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. These mosquitoes bite during daylight hours and are common in urban areas.
Dengue fever causes high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, nausea, and vomiting. A rash often develops. Dengue symptoms can last up to 10 days and complete recovery can take 2-4 weeks or longer. Occasionally, a potentially fatal complication of dengue infection occurs called dengue hemorrhagic fever.
Dengue fever is found throughout Indonesia. On occasion, cases have been detected in Papua. Although most are believed to be imported infections from areas outside Papua, the possibility exists for local transmission to occur, as Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are also found in Papua.
Those suffering from dengue should drink as much liquid as possible (potable water, milk, tea, coconut milk); fever-reducing medication; and immediately go for a check-up at the nearest clinic, hospital, or health care center.
Prevention of Aedes mosquito breeding inside and near homes is critical to reducing the risk of dengue infection. The three main ways to eliminate mosquito breeding areas are to scrub all permanent water-holding basins at least once per week to eliminate growth of mosquito eggs and larvae; make sure water drums and other water containers are covered; and removing or burying discarded cans, tires, broken bottles, and similar items that may hold rain water.
